About me

My name is Roger Hutchins and I am a fully qualified professional illustrator and graphic designer.

​

My qualifications are as follows:

  • Art O Level in 1983

  • Art A Level in 1984

  • Foundation course diploma in 1987

  • BA Honours in Graphic design in 1990

  • City & Guilds 7407 teaching qualification for adult education in 2007.

I began teaching adult education classes in 2006, and continue to do this.  I teach students to work in Watercolour, Pastels, Acrylic, Gouche and Oil Paints.  I also teach drawing, calligraphy, graphic design and childrens book illustration.  I have trained apprentices to mount and frame artworks on paper.  I began teaching online classes in 2020 painting 'upside down' to the camera so my students could easily see what I was doing.​

I have also taught childrens' book illustration courses, how to make 'pop ups' for pop up books or pop up greetings cards and Calligraphy classes.

In September 2018 I held a Retrospective exhibition at Orleans House Gallery, which was the most comprehensive collection of my artworks.  It was housed in the Stables Gallery from September - November. Several of these works sold during this exhibition.  As well as being the 'artist in residence', I also held various demonstrations for the public to watch and even join in as I went along!​

My wife Rachel and I own a caravan at Thorness Bay, Isle of Wight (North side, near Cowes), this has provided me with an awful lot of inspiration; not just the stunning island itself but also our incredible site is a great stimulus for my artwork; all of these works can be found under the subpage 'Isle of Wight artworks’ tab above.

I have become an enthusiastic Field Archer since I met my wife who has participated in the sport since she was at secondary school, and we are both members of Magna Carta Field Archers based in Lyne.  I use Acrylic paints to create target faces for our club and Rachel's Archery business.  These target faces are painted on either Hessian, Calico and sometimes on re-used fabrics which makes the process more sustainable.  Please look at the ‘archery targets’ tab above for some examples.

I have also undertaken several private commissions.

In 2020, my wife Rachel briefed me on a particular Christmas card design she wanted.  It was a Victorian style Christmas Eve in Godshill, Isle of Wight.  The design was entered into a competition with the Christmas Imaginarium shop in Ryde, Isle of Wight and we were one of the winners.  Our card was then turned into Christmas cards that went on sale at their shop as well as online.  This became our Christmas card for 2020.

In 2021, I entered a competition with Arts Richmond to design a Christmas card for Richmond MP Sarah Olny.  My design was of the view of Richmond from Richmond Hill.  I came second in the competition and had my design on the back of her official Christmas card.

In June 2022, I entered a competition called 'Politics in art' and submitted a collage of Alan Turing.  I was thrilled to win this competition.
